Home Improvement

Everyone the world over is suffering financially, be it the millionaire who cannot purchase the latest Aston Martin after losing several hundred thousand on the stock market, or the blue-collar worker who struggles to find money for the water bill. The global recession is hitting people hard, and unfortunately it’s a fact of life that the first things to suffer in an economic downturn are the non-essentials, such as hobbies and home renovations. Paying people to come and redecorate your bathroom or paint your ceilings is shoved to the backburner as workers concentrate on simply paying for the essentials like the mortgage, food, and utilities. But with a little careful budgeting, it can be possible to undertake a home improvement and refresh your house (perhaps making your financial situation seem less gloomy, too).
Places to shop for cheap home improvement products include warehouses and factory outlets that sell items in bulk. Seconds (where a paint tin might be damaged, but the paint inside is unchanged) are also an inexpensive way to obtain do it yourself equipment. Equipment can be hired at a fraction of the cost of buying it, and roping in friends and family (with the promise of a free meal and perhaps a beer) can counteract the cost of labour. Make a weekend of it and invite people to sleep over so you can paint, talk and catch up into the wee hours of the morning. With a team of like-minded people you are sure to have your kitchen retiled in next to no time. Work on a barter system, where you can obtain professional advice in exchange for something you can offer (some of your time, home cooked meals or something you come up with together).
Other good places to shop are second hand dealers and auction houses. Many times, when a building is demolished, people have gone in beforehand and stripped the fittings. These can be purchased, usually at a great price, and in bulk so you’re sure not to run out. Outlets selling overstocks are good to keep an eye on as they sometimes come into container loads of items such as flat packed kitchens and white goods that they need to sell off quickly – and cheaply. If you are the type to scour junk yards, you can sometimes pick up a bargain by way of a used item that just needs a little T.L.C.
In all, home improvements need not be an expensive affair – with the right attitude and a little imagination, you can do it yourself for a great price!
