Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias urged young people to run for office during his commencement address to Bradley University’s graduating Class of 2007.

Giannoulias emphasized that the country needs more young, talented and energetic leaders to run for public office.

“Today, I am asking you to get involved, because there is no greater form of leadership than civic engagement,” Giannoulias said. “I am asking our generation to do better.

“I believe if we can harness the energy and talent exhibited by the Bradley Class of 2007, we can run a less corrupt and more capable, innovative, and compassionate government than our parents’ generation,” he said.

Giannoulias became the nation’s youngest state Treasurer in January when he was sworn in at the age of 30. School officials also believe he was the youngest commencement speaker at a Bradley graduation.

Giannoulias said his generation is set to be the Next Greatest Generation.

That generation lived through the most devastating attack on a U.S. city and is rebuilding it. The graduates grew up recycling and cares about cleaning up the environment, have adapted to rapid technological changes by learning to multitask and self publish on the Internet, and are better equip to live in a diverse, global society.

“Now, you may not feel the same obligation to give back to your country, but I hope you do. You may not feel like you have the time or the expertise to hold an office, but I know you do,” Giannoulias said. “America is a “by the people, for the people country.” There’s no better place to serve than your local government.”

Giannoulias said he has faith that young people will get involved in the political process. More 18 to 29 year olds voted in the last presidential election since the voting age was lowered during the Vietnam War. A national survey found that young people on both sides of the fence plan to be more involved in the next election cycle.
